Everything worthwhile improves with use, including our brains and our brawn.
Everything in today’s world seems to center in automation. We ride everywhere, seldom walk. With few exceptions, our material possessions are all made automatically by machines. Our life is computed almost automatically in many ways.
The question is, are we better off in today’s world than in the world of yesterday? Of course we are materially for we all possess more of the world’s goods than ever before, and also we are assured of much more leisure, an almost unheard of thing in other times, except for those who had servants to do their bidding.
Yes, on the whole we are really better off, although this automation should not extend into our lives so much that exercise is a thing of the past too, for all of us need exercise to keep up our blood tone, our circulation and to keep us from becoming flabby and old before our time. There is danger always in excess of any kind, and everything being automatically done for us is quite apt to make us lazy and indifferent to some real needs.
We would not care to go back to the horse and buggy, or the carpet beating of another generation, but we should temper our work that is automatic with some that takes real active muscle work to keep us in good condition health wise.
Everything worthwhile improves with use, including our brains and our brawn.
