Caught the Glasgow bus at 9 AM after bidding goodbye to the sweet Mrs. Robertson. No friendly repartee on the bus, mostly everyone glum and grim.
Dali, Le Christ
Into Glasgow at 2. Lunch at the Adelphi Hotel, near train station, not bad. A decent lunch at the Adelphi Hotel near the train station. Took a tram to the galleries where we saw Dali’s “Le Christ” on the cross of St. John, some old armor and excellent scale models of old ships and new. Sat in Kelvin’s Park watching lawn bowlers until time to leave for the center and our night bus to London.
It stopped at terrible places to eat but we managed to sleep off and on during the night despite bags bouncing out of overhead string racks elsewhere. A couple of whores on the bus with heavy pancake make-up and visibly dirty ankles.
The sidewalks in all European cities were wall-to-wall with hookers. Only Hollywood could find them charming. Working as I had in the low-rent commercial district of Boston, I had observed them daily under our windows hustling tricks and bent over the open windows of police cars exchanging pleasantries with Boston's finest.
They didn't look like anything you would want to bring home to meet the family but at least they seemed er, uh, clean. We weren't prepared for the dirty ankles above the bright red toenails of the women who were on the Glasgow to London night bus with us.
