Save Polaroid

AG_1969_X

This was supposed to upload to the new Save Polaroid blog that has just been expertly redesigned thanks to the efforts of Dave Bias. Look for links in the left column. However, I could upload it on Flickr but couldn't somehow get it over to Save Polaroid.

Probably just another Senior Moment. Whatever. Here's the story: For many years I experimented with off-the-shelf Polaroid cameras when I was doing my book, How to Make Better Polaroid Instant Pictures (Doubleday 1970). I took this with a Colorpack II and then a couple of years later tried a similar shot with b&w film in a Polaroid BigShot as well as a Hasselbald C500 with a Sonar 150 mm. lens.

I matted the prints and then asked around the office at 549 Tech Square if anyone could tell which was the Hassy shot. No one could, not even John Wolbarst, who was the photography head honcho and former managing editor of Modern Photography magazine.

It proves that subject is more important than hardware. Polaroid's Colorpack II and BigShot were one-piece molded plastic models with plastic lenses that sold for well under $50 at the time, whereas Hasselblads went for thousands of dollars.

And one more point -- this is a low-rez scan.
