self-caricature by Bud Blake, courtesy Wikipedia
Julian W. "Bud" Blake was 87 when he died but it would be a shame to not include him here among the greats who made it to age 90. He was a huge influence in my cartooning life because I loved his lively work and friendly attitude toward his characters. Remember that the 1950s was when so many cartoonists from the UK were featured in American print with characters that appeared more gloomy and grim.

I first became aware of Bud's work in quarter-page ads he did for this magazine
Bud was tired of working in advertising in 1965 and spent his next 30 years drawing the cartoon strip Tiger.

For more information I recommend this YouTube visit to Bud's studio in 1994 and this blog by a Dutch fan with more of Bud's work that predates Tiger.
